He enlisted in Company I, Seventh Michigan Infantry as Sergeant on 28 June 1861 at age 27. He was wounded in action at Fair Oaks, VA on 31 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the leg in action on 17 September 1862, and helped to shelter by Lt. Hodgman.

The rest of the War

He died of his wound on 29 September 1862 at Keedysville, MD.
