Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in the Muckalee Guards - Company A, 12th Georgia Infantry - and was appointed Second Sergeant on 15 June 1861. He was promoted Lieutenant in February 1862, and Captain commanding the company on 8 May 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action 12 October 1863 in action along the Rapidan River in Virginia. He was elected sheriff of Sumter County, Georgia and resigned his commission in June 1864.
