Before Antietam
Age 19, from Jonesville, MI, he enlisted in Company C, Seventh Michigan Infantry on 9 August 1861 at Jonesville, for 3 years.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Corporal in January 1863 and again wounded, in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He re-enlisted on 16 December 1863 at Stevensburg, VA and was promoted to Sergeant on 1 April 1864.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing a Confederate battle flag in action at Hatcher's Run, VA on 27 October 1864.
He was appointed First Sergeant 2 November 1864 and commissioned First Lieutenant to date from 12 June 1864. He mustered out at Jeffersonville, IN on 5 July 1865.
