The ward of his uncle Samuel Pinkney Thurmond (1820-87, lawyer and legislator in Athens, GA), he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 18th Regiment Georgia Infantry June 14, 1861. Transferred to Company B, 16th Regiment Georgia Infantry July 26, 1861. Appointed Sergeant. Elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant June 27, 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.
