An overseer on his father's farm in 1860, he enlisted as Private in Company F, 16th Georgia Infantry on 19 July 1861 with his older brother James. Elected Jr. Second Lieutenant 1 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The rest of the War

Furloughed for 60 days from September 30, 1862. Roll dated January 31, 1865, last on file, shows him absent with leave. No later record.
