Before Sharpsburg
From Lincoln County, NC, he was a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, and had been a lawyer and militia officer in North Carolina before the War. He was commissioned Captain, Company K of the 23 Regiment, North Carolina State Troops in July 1861, and elected Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on 10 May 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pines on the Peninsula later that month.
On the Campaign
He assumed command of the Regiment in Maryland on 18 September when Colonel Christie took the Brigade.
The rest of the War
He was again wounded at Gettysburg in July 1863 and soon after appointed Brigadier General to date from 1 September. He was wounded for a third time in action at Spottsylvania in 1864, and served through to Appomattox.
After the War
He resumed his legal practice in Charlotte, NC until moving to Birmingham, Alabama in 1887 and becoming a banker.
