Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 24 year old farmer on his recently-widower father George's place in Gaston County, NC (there were 4 other Carpenter families farming nearby). He enlisted there on 11 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father filed for his final pay in April 1863.
