In 1860 he was a 16 year old farmer on his parents' place at Seagles Store in Lincoln County, NC. He enlisted at Lincolnton on 5 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, First North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

His father William filed for his final pay in May 1863.
