Age 22, from Lincoln County, he mustered as Private, Company B, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 23 May 1861 in Lincoln County. He was promoted to Corporal in November 1861 and Sergeant on 10 May 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 31 May 1862 and returned to duty, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap on South Mountain.
