Age 22, from Lincoln County, he mustered as Private, Company K, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 22 June 1861 in Northampton County.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the thigh and captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap on South Mountain.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort McHenry, MD by January 1863 and exchanged on 26 January. He was hospitalized 30 January in Petersburg, VA and furloughed home on 5 February 1863. He died there on 23 February 1863.
