He was wounded in the right hip in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap. He was captured there on 4 October 1862.

Paroled at Fort McHenry, MD for exchange on 21 November 1862. Appointed 4th Corporal in 1863. Deserted 1 March 1864.
