Before Antietam
He enrolled in the Fourth New York Infantry (22 April 1861, age 32) at New York City to serve two years. He mustered in as First Sergeant, Company B on 9 May 1861. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 7 December to replace Lieutenant Thornton, promoted. He was tried by court martial at Suffolk, Virginia in July 1862 (charge, outcome unknown), and transferred to Company C on 15 August.
On the Campaign
He died 17 September 1862 of wounds received in action at Antietam.
