In 1860 he was 22 years old and lived on his parent's small farm at West Liberty in Logan County, OH. He enlisted in Company F of the 23rd Ohio Infantry on 5 June 1861 at Columbus, Ohio.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September.
