By 1855 he was working on his father's farm in Broome County, NY, and at age 21, on 5 October 1861, he enlisted at Binghamton to serve three years and mustered in as Corporal, Company H, 89th New York Infantry on 11 October.
On the Campaign
He died at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862, probably killed in action.
