Son of home builder and master carpenter Gardner Rouse (1806-1881), in 1860 he was a 23 year old carpenter in Plainfield, Windham County, CT. He enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company F, 8th Connecticut Infantry on 1 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
