25 years old, he enrolled on 4 May 1861 at New York City and mustered in as Surgeon of the 9th New York Infantry.
On the Campaign
He treated wounded soldiers at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and afterward, probably at the Locust Spring field hospital on the Geeting farm, and later in Frederick, MD.
The rest of the War
He mustered out with the regiment on May 1863.
