In his after-action report, Colonel Kimball said "I cannot close this report without calling your special attention to ... Sergeants Smith, Hankinson, Jackson and Keating (the latter both wounded), Company E ..."
The rest of the War
He was promoted First Sergeant on November 21, 1862 and mustered out with his company May 20, 1863 in New York City.
