Age 20 years. Enlisted August 9, 1861 at New York City and mustered in as Private, Company E to serve two years. He was promoted Sergeant on August 11, 1862.

On the Campaign

In his after-action report, Colonel Kimball said "I cannot close this report without calling your special attention to ... Sergeants Smith, Hankinson, Jackson and Keating (the latter both wounded), Company E ..."

The rest of the War

He transferred to Co. K, Third Infantry, May 6, 1863 but discharged on May 14.
