Before Antietam
He was a student at Norwich University in Norwich (now in Northfield), Vermont from 1848-50, then farmed at Cornwall. He was commissioned Captain, Company F of the 5th Vermont Infantry on 4 September 1861. He was then appointed Major of the 9th Vermont on 21 June 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment on 20 March 1862, and resigned on 11 May 1863.
After the War
He was again a farmer in Cornwall and raised "blooded horses and fine sheep", for the rest of his life.
