Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer on his parent's place at Lumberton in Robeson County, NC. On 8 February 1862, by then a 19 year old clerk, he enlisted at Lumberton and mustered as 4th Sergeant, Company A, 46th North Carolina Infantry on 16 April.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in Winchester, VA on 1 (or 3) October 1862.
