Before Sharpsburg
He was reading the law at the start of the War. Enlisted as First Sergeant, Company E on 13 April 1861, from the Newberry District. Elected Adjutant of the Regiment at its reorganization on 16 May 1862.
The rest of the War
Wounded at Fredericksburg, VA 12 December 1862; Getttysburg, PA (3x) in July 1863; Chickamauga, GA in September 1863; Berryville, VA through the mouth. Surrendered at Greensboro, NC 26 April 1865.
After the War
He was mayor of Newberry from 1871-1876, elected to the SC state legislature in 1877, and to the State Senate in 1888. He was elected SC attorney general in 1890 and appointed State Supreme Court Justice in 1891 - later Chief Justice.
