Enlisted at age 25 in Company K, Third Infantry as 3rd Sergeant on 14 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Promoted First Sergeant by October 1862. Appointed Brevet 2nd Lieutenant on 2 July and to Second Lieutenant on 5 July 1863. To First Lieutenant on 7 October 1863 (to rank from 2 July). Promoted to Captain, Company K in September 1863. Reported as "left in the hands of the enemy" in hospital at Knoxvillve, TN by June 1864. Probably a prisoner of war to the end, and not on roll at surrender in 1865.
