In 1858 he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, the National Greys, 53rd Regiment, Maryland Volunteers. Entere service in the 2nd Maryland Infantry as Captain, Company H, 18 September 18 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Promoted Major of the Regiment on 17 February 1863.

After the War

He mustered out of service on 20 May 1864.
