Before Antietam

Age 20, he enlisted in Company A, 2nd Maryland Infantry on 13 June 1861. By October he had been promoted Corporal, acted as Company Clerk, made Color Sergeant, and was serving as the Colonel's clerk. He was promoted First Sergeant prior to Antietam.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
