Entered service as First Lieutenant, Company E, 2nd Maryland Infantry on 16 July 1861. Promoted Captain 26 May 1862. Wounded in action at Bull Run, VA on 29 August 1862.

He was mortally wounded, losing a leg in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He died of his wounds on 15 October 1862.
