In 1860 he was 27 years old and had a small farm at Twelve Mile in the Pickens District, SC. He enlisted as a Private in Company A, Second South Carolina Infantry on 1 July 1862 in Columbia.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

His basic service from Salley,1 as G.J. Kelly. Personal details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has him as General Andrew Jackson Kelly, and from the US Census of 1860. His memorial is on Findagrave, and has his death on 18 September.

He married Mary Matilda Townsend (1834-1919) in April 1855 in the Anderson District and they had 4 children; their youngest, John, born in March 1862.
