Before Sharpsburg

Age 17, he enlisted at Columbia, SC on 8 April 1861 and mustered there as a Private in Company A, Second South Carolina Infantry on 5 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was sent to Fort McHenry and on 13 October to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He returned to duty about January 1863. He was sentenced by a court martial about June 1863 to forfeit one month's pay, charges not given. He was afterward with his company to at least September 1864, the latest record in his military file.
