From Newberry, OH, he enlisted in Company B, 7th Ohio Infantry on 20 June 1861 at age 18. Wounded in action at Cedar Mountain, VA on 9 August 1862.

He was wounded in the foot in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Returned to his Company 17 October, but was discharged 27 October 1862 to enlist in Company L, 6th United States Cavalry.
