Before Antietam
Raised in Worcester, MA he was living in Cleveland, OH at the start of the War. Enlisted in the 7th Infantry, Company A, on 19 June 1861. Appointed Sergeant.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the shin in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
Promoted to First Sergeant on 7 November 1862. Mustered out with his Company on 6 July 1864. In August he re-enlisted as Private in Company B, 177th Ohio Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant. He mustered out with that Company at Greensboro, NC on 24 June 1865.
After the War
He worked as a machinist in Cleveland until at least 1894, when he became custodian of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument there.
