He entered service on 7 June 1861 at age 29, as Private in Company D, 7th Ohio Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the shoulder and arm in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and returned to duty (paroled). He was listed missing in action at Dallas, GA on 25 May 1864. Records from Andersonville Prison, GA show he was captured near Dallas and held at Andersonville and Florence, SC. He was released on 28 February 1865 and exchanged at Goldsboro, NC. He mustered out on 28 April 1865.
