He enlisted at age 19 in Company G, 7th Ohio Infantry on 25 April 1861 for 3 months, then reenlisted for three years in the 7th 20 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in the side and arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of disability at Washington, DC on 4 April 1863.
