Thomas Jefferson Adams

Son of a school teacher, in 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his father and 4 siblings at Alexandria in Rapides Parish, LA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 8th Louisiana Infantry. He was ill in a hospital in Richmond, VA in June and in a hospital in Winchester, VA from 27 August to 8 September.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his right shoulder in action at Rappahannock Station, VA on 7 November 1863. He was afterward absent in Virginia hospitals and on furlough in Alabama, and was declared permanently disabled by a medical board at Greenville, AL and retired to the Invalid Corps at at Greenville, AL on 25 January 1865 due to his Rappahannock wounds.

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer at Harrisonburg in Catahoula Parish, LA. In 1900 he was a raftsman there.

He married Mary E Shaw (1847-1924) in November 1867. A post-war photograph of TJ and Mary was shared to Findagrave by Samantha Edwards.
