Before Sharpsburg
Son of a prosperous butcher, in 1860 he was an unmarried clerk living with his parents, 8 siblings, and 10 slaves at Bonnet Carré, St. John the Baptist Parish, LA. He enlisted on 22 July 1861 at Camp Moore, LA and mustered as a Sergeant in Company H, 10th Louisiana Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant Major of the regiment on 1 January 1862 and elected Junior 2nd (3rd) Lieutenant on 17 February. He was promoted again, to First Lieutenant in August, and to Captain, date not found, but probably did not learn of it before his death.
On the Campaign
He was with his company at Harpers Ferry on 15 September but was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
