He enlisted in Company B, 8th Louisiana Infantry on 23 June 1861 at Camp Moore, LA. He was then a 20 year old caulker in New Orleans.

On the Campaign

He was captured on 19 September 1862 following action at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

Sent to Fortress Monroe, VA from Fort McHenry, MD on 27 October 1862, for exchange. Paroled and declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA 10 November 1862. Rolls from November to December 1863 state "Absent without leave since September 1862." Later records say "Deserted and joined the Confederate States Navy, May 29th, 1863."
