Before Antietam
He was orphaned at 7, raised in Philadelphia, PA to age 14, then in Cleveland, OH. He attended school and Agricultural College there. He was engaged in drilling oil in Mecca, OH when the War began. He enlisted in Company H, 7th Ohio Infantry (3 months) on 25 April 1861. He re-enlisted in the 3 year unit, same Company on 20 June 1861. He was wounded in action at Winchester, VA on 23 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was present with his unit in action at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was discharged on disability on 26 November 1862 at Washington, DC.
After the War
He joined the Cleveland Fire Department in 1863, became Captain (Mazeppa No. 1), and Assistant Chief in 1880. He designed a pipeline system for fireboats for Cleveland, and introduced a Fire Cadet system of training for new fire fighters. He retired after more than 30 years in the Department.
