A 23 year old clerk in New Orleans, he enlisted in Company E, 5th Louisiana Infantry on May 4th, 1861 in New Orleans.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to No. 5 US Army Hospital in Frederick, MD on Oct. 15th, 1862, and sent to Fort McHenry, MD Oct. 18th, 1862. Paroled and sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange at Aikens Landing, VA on Nov. 10th, 1862. muster rolls from Nov. 1862 to June 1863 state he was "Absent Without Leave Since Dec., 1862 ... Deserted in Nov. 1862. Supposed to Be in Mobile, Ala."
