Then a 27 year old hostler in New Orleans, he enlisted in the 3rd Company, Washington Artillery March 14th, 1862 in New Orleans. He was present with the battery on every muster roll from March 1862 into February 1865.

He was with the battery at Sharpsburg.

Present in the following engagements; Rappahannock Sta., Aug. 23rd, 1862; Manassas, Va., Aug. 29th; Sharpsburg, Md., Sept. 15th, 16th and 17th; Fredericksburg, Dec. 13th, 1862; Fredericksburg or Chancellorsville, May 3rd, 1863; Gettysburg, Pa., July 3rd; Williamsport, Md., July 6th: Kingsland Creek, May 13th, 1864; Drewery's Bluff, May 14th and 15th; Petersburg, Va., June, 1864, July, 1864; September, 1864; Oct., 1864, Nov., 1864, Dec., 1864, Jan. and Feb., 1865. He was paroled at Lynchburg, Va., April 13th, 1865.
