Before Sharpsburg
A 22 year old clerk in New Orleans, he enlisted in the 3rd Company, Washington Artillery on May 8th, 1862 in Richmond, VA. The Company roll notes that he was "Present in the following engagements; 1862, Rappahannock Station, Aug. 23rd; Manassas, Aug. 29th; Sharpsburg, Md., Sept. 15th, 16th, 17th".

He was present at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was absent, sick from mid-1863, and detailed to the Ordnance Department, Richmond, from November 1863 to the end of the War - noted as "unfit for service".
