A farmer from Mansfield, LA, he enlisted in Company F, 9th Louisiana Infantry on March 8th, 1862 in De Soto Parish, LA.

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
Forwarded to Fort McHenry, MD on Oct. 14th, 1862. Paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on Oct. 19th, 1862. Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on Nov. 10th, 1862. He lost his right arm. He was absent from his unit into February 1863, then declared "disabled for life" and located west of the Mississippi River.
