William Anderson Woods

In 1860 he was a 21 year old living with his parents and 5 siblings on their small farm at Bengal in Bulloch County, GA. He enlisted on 9 September 1861 at Eden Station (Station No. 2 on the Central Railroad of Georgia) in Effingham County, GA and mustered as a Private in Company D, 61st Georgia Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 10 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on 6 October. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital from 9 October to 3 November and was formally exchanged on 10 November to return to duty.

He was appointed 4th Corporal in November or December 1862. He was absent sick for much of 1864 (with and without leave). He later testified that he was present to be surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865, but he is not among those listed there.

In 1880 he was a laborer in Bulloch County, GA he was a farmer and carpenter in Bulloch County to at least 1905.

His service from Henderson,1, who lists him as W. Anderson Woods, Sr and says he was wounded at Frederick on 10 September, and from his Compiled Service Records,2 online from fold3. He married Annie (?) by about 1866, and they had at least 3 children.
