He was severely wounded in the leg in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
On furlough November 1862-February 1863. Rolls from March 1863 to February 1, 1864, show "He furnished a substitute who deserted September 18, 1862, and was thereby reported a deserter himself; ordered to return but failed to, March April 1864." Pension records show he enlisted in Company A, 12th Regiment Georgia Militia, July 1864. Surrendered at Kingston, Georgia, May 12, 1865.
