He enlisted in Company I as 3rd Corporal - May 5, 1862. Appointed 3rd Sergeant.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the right arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Richmond, VA in September and October 1862. Appointed First Sergeant on 1 May 1863. Wounded slightly at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. Wounded again, in the right leg, in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863, and again hospitalized in Richmond. Elected Jr. 2nd Lieutenant August 23, 1863. Wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, June 9, 1864; through both thighs at Fort Steadman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Captured in a Richmond, Virginia, hospital April 3, 1865. Released at Johnson’s Island, Ohio, June 18, 1865. He was then described as of florid complexion, sandy hair and blue eyes, at 5 feet, 10 inches tall.
