A resident of Wolfeborough, he enlisted at age 21 in Company H, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 23 September 1861. He was wounded at Fair Oaks, VA on 1 June 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He deserted from his unit 27 April 1863 near Falmouth, VA.
