From Lisbon, NH, he enlisted at age 37 in Company C, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 23 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Sergeant, date not given. He was discharged for disability on 28 November 1862. He reenlisted, as Private in the First Company (later Company A), New Hampshire Heavy Artillery on 17 July 1863 and was appointed Sergeant on 25 August. He was reduced to Private on 18 December 1863. Appointed Corporal 1 August 1864, and again reduced to Private on 20 January 1865. He mustered out of service on 11 September 1865.
