Before Antietam
From Rochester, he enlisted at age 21 in Company D, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 26 September 1861. He was wounded at Fair Oaks, VA on 1 June 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He reenlisted on 19 February 1864, but deserted his unit from Point Lookout, MD on 10 May 1864.
