Before Antietam
From Milton, he enlisted at age 26 in Company A, 5th New Hampshire Infantry, and mustered as Corporal on 12 October.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Sergeant on 7 October 1862 and First Sergeant on 1 January 1863. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 3 October 1863 and First Lieutenant of Company G on 2 July 1864 (although not mustered at that rank). He was discharged at Petersburg, VA on 15 October 1864, at the end of his term of service.
After the War
He was a member of Eli Wentworth Post No.89, GAR, in Milton, NH.

A collection of his wartime letters are at William & Mary University. His formal commission as First Lieutenant was offered at auction in 2006 by Raynors'. His discharge certificate was sold on eBay, also in 2006.
