Before Antietam
From Dover, he enlisted at age 35 in Company D, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 17 September 1861. He was wounded at Fair Oaks, VA on 1 June 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability on 28 February 1863.
