From Wolfeborough, he enlisted at age 38 in Company H, First New Hampshire Infantry for 3 months on 2 May 1861. He mustered out on 9 August. He reenlisted, in Company H, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 11 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He mustered out at the end of his term of service on 29 October 1864.
