From New York City, he enlisted at age 27 in Company D, 5th New Hampshire Infantry in October 1861, mustering as Sergeant on 23 October. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Company B on 18 February 1862.

He was promoted to First Lieutenant, Company C, on 18 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He resigned because of disability on 13 January 1863.
