Before Antietam

From Amherst, he enlisted at age 18 in Company E, First New Hampshire Infantry on 19 April 1861. He mustered out on 9 August 1861. He reenlisted, in Company I, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 14 September 1861, and mustered as Corporal on 15 October.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant, date not given. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Company F on 6 October 1863. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 July 1864, but not mustered at that rank. He was discharged at the expiration of his term of service on 29 October 1864.
